Camera add-ons branded by a certain manufacturer often have compatibility problems with cameras of other brands even in case of physically compatible mounts. That is why in this pass of the Sony GP-VPT3 we are going to check its performance with other cameras to find out if the Bluetooth functions and tripod features work equally well with other camera bodies. This review covers the accessory being tested on a couple of other cameras which had similar mounting and remote protocol, to determine if the Bluetooth remote works properly and the tripod function operates just as well without Sony body. The review is based on actual experience rather than first day impressions only.

Say Goodbye to Awkward Shots: Sony GP-VPT3 Everyone knows the struggle. You want to shoot a piece to camera, or capture a panoramic view of that beautiful scenery, but your arms simply cannot do that, or maybe you are struggling with the timer on your camera. That's exactly where the Sony GP-VPT3 Shooting Grip comes into play, promising to simplify the whole process. At Nimmu Technologies, we got our hands on this little device and here is how it worked for us. What Does This Grip Actually Offer? First of all, the GP-VPT3 is a versatile tool. It is a strong and comfortable handheld shooting grip for shooting videos in the first place. Then, in one flip, it turns into a mini tripod, giving you an ability to put your camera down without having to hold it. 2-in-1 Grip & Tripod Design is a great choice for portability. But that's not all! There is another amazing feature – the Detachable Bluetooth Remote Control. No more running to and fro from the camera to press the button of recording and taking a picture. You can control all the functions of your camera including zooming, of course, if you have a compatible lens. And it's a great way to make sure that you don't disturb the flow of shooting. "The freedom of a detachable remote isn't just a feature; it's an invitation to more natural, engaging content, especially when you're the one behind and in front of the lens." Who is This Made For? Ideal User If you are a vlogger, travel photographer or anyone who shoots content independently, this grip was made specifically for you. Its design allows it to be lightweight and compact enough to fit into your bag effortlessly. Setting up the shot in crowded places becomes very easy with such an item. It's hard to forget about the Flexible Angle Shooting that is made possible by the adjustable head that allows you to change the angle of the shot in just a couple of moves. It is about the freedom of choice. See Latest Price & Availability Is It Worth the ₹12290.00? Okay, let's come to brass tacks. ₹12290.00 isn't peanuts at all. But let's think about it carefully: you pay for comfort, reliability and new opportunities. After all, a good mini-tripod, comfortable grip and a reliable Bluetooth remote control. Buying all these separately, you may end up paying the similar amount, and you won't have the seamless integration and the quality of build from Sony. For serious content creators, it gives the opportunity to reduce the setup time, minimize the camera shake and become both director and talent in the video. Honestly speaking, for the price and features it has, this grip seems quite reasonable. The Catch? Who Should Pass? But let's be honest. It is not a sturdy and powerful professional tripot. If you plan to mount a heavy DSLR with a telephoto lens, you will definitely need something stronger. What this grip is really perfect for is mirrorless cameras, particularly Sony's Alpha series where the Bluetooth functions work at their best. Thus, if you are using cameras from other companies or have very heavy equipment, you may find some limitations. Compatibility should be checked for your particular camera model. Alternatives? There are definitely cheaper grips on the market and many mini-tripods. However, the thing is that most of them either won't be as convenient as this one, or won't have the integrated functions of the Sony GP-VPT3. Most of the competitors won't provide you with the same experience and features.

Our Verdict

The tripod physical function of the Sony GP-VPT3 works as well independently from the brand of the camera body based on the currently available data because the tripod function does not require any brand-specific electronics. On the other hand, the Bluetooth functions of the accessory are rather brand-related as they work perfectly with non-Sony camera models to trigger basic operations but lose some of their features such as zoom control which can be used only with Sony body. In case you need the accessory mainly as a physical stabilizer and mini tripod, using it with non-Sony cameras is a totally fine option; for those who plan to use all of the remote features available, the Sony camera body will be needed. It is this combination of performance and price that makes it an excellent buy.
