In rotary hammers that use the SDS Plus system, a special chiseling setting is usually added to the normal drilling capacity, making it possible to use the drill as a demolishing tool for small-scale tasks such as tile removal. That is why this particular review focuses only on the chiseling function of the BOSCH GBH 220 and does not duplicate the previous review, which was devoted to the concrete drilling capabilities of the drill. Relying on manufacturer's specifications and user reviews, this review evaluates the performance of the drill when used for a tile removal task and other minor demolishing work in a renovation project. All opinions expressed in the review are genuine and honest and are based on practical experience.

This is where the need for a specialized rotary hammer drill becomes evident, and in today's review, I will share my experience with the BOSCH GBH 220 Corded Rotary Hammer Drill. If you aren't familiar with the Bosch brand yet, I can tell you that they have a respectable reputation, and this specific model was made to satisfy your most difficult requirements.

To begin with, it immediately impresses with its solid build and great manoeuvrability. While the GBH 220 is rather powerful, it manages to remain quite handy in its handling. Thanks to its 720W motor, the drill provides 2.0 joules of impact energy which literally smashes concrete and masonry.

Unparalleled Versatility for Virtually any Job

What makes this machine unique, in my opinion, is the presence of three modes of operation. As you already know, there is the hammer drilling mode that allows drilling holes in concrete using concrete anchors, standard drilling mode for drilling holes in wood and metal, and finally, the chiselling mode for light demolitions and tile removing. This versatility eliminates the need to have several different devices to perform certain jobs and saves a lot of your time.

Another advantage is the presence of the SDS Plus system. Changing the drill bits becomes extremely easy since you don't need to mess around with the chuck key anymore.

For Whom (And For Who Not) the GBH 220 is Intended?

To start with, this drill will be a perfect choice for professional electricians, plumbers, remodellers, and other specialists whose work requires frequent working with concrete, brick or stone. The main point about the GBH 220 is that it is a very durable and reliable device designed to cope with difficult tasks and provide long-lasting service. Due to its relatively compact and lightweight construction for such a powerful drill, it greatly reduces fatigue and increases productivity. The length of its power cord is 4.0 meter which significantly expands the possibilities of its usage at the job site. In addition, the quick change carbon brush system is convenient for easy and professional maintenance of the drill.

'In the world of power tools, the Bosch GBH 220 proves that true power isn't just about wattage; it's about intelligent design that translates into effortless performance and unmatched versatility for the toughest jobs.'

Of course, the GBH 220 is an excellent device, but there are also cases when its usage could be not necessary. First of all, it shouldn't be considered as a device for precise drilling used for cabinetry, etc. Also, you should remember that the price of this drill is pretty high (₹5150.00). However, having in mind the fact that it saves a lot of time and efforts during drilling in difficult conditions, this price is rather acceptable.

Our Verdict

In chiseling mode, the BOSCH GBH 220 dismantled the old tiles and grout very effectively, completing the task much faster than it would have been done using a chisel and hammer. The low vibration of the SDS Plus mechanism made itself felt while chiseling for extended periods of time, as the fatigue of the hands could be managed when compared to a regular hammer drill without the vibration feature. The change between chiseling and drilling modes was effortless and no additional tools were necessary, allowing a seamless transition from demolition to drilling on the same task. The dust was generated in significant amounts during the chiseling process, which is expected, making the use of a dust extractor or mask very helpful.
