As you can see from the above, product photography has totally different requirements for lenses than other genres and requires close focusing distance, sharpness and good control over the background blur, which is why the product-focused test was the main aim for testing the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN, rather than reproducing the results of my previous test with street photography genre in mind. In this article I want to share the results of the tests for small product photography with clean background over several sessions: minimum focusing distance for shooting products in detail, edge-to-edge sharpness at different apertures and control over the background blur. This review is based on honest and realistic impressions from the actual everyday use of this lens, not just first day experience, which influenced all of the conclusions in this review.

And Last but Not Least, One Lens For Virtually All? Let's face it, trying to find that one lens that covers all your needs without making you sacrifice a great deal of your precious money and your back is challenging. You seek something that is compact, sharp, and versatile, and does not make you think twice before carrying your camera along with you for a casual shot or a trip? Well, then the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary could be the one for you. Why Should You Give This Small but Mighty Piece of Gear a Chance? What sets this zoom apart from others is its design specifically for APS-C size Sony E mount cameras and a wide 18-50mm focal length, which in turn means an approximate 27-75mm equivalent in full-size frame sensors. Hence, you can start from pretty wide angles that are suitable for landscape and interior shooting and finish with a portrait-length focal point. In other words, you got yourself an incredibly versatile lens that should be a part of any photographer's kit. But there is one more amazing thing that you get with this zoom lens – a constant F2.8 aperture. Yes, F2.8 is the key to shooting almost everything in almost any lighting conditions – from dusk to low-lit interior and even night photography, as well as portrait with beautiful bokeh. In case you did not know, this aperture provides plenty of light and enables you to achieve sharpness with low ISO. Also, subject separation is a piece of cake with such a big aperture. "The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN lens is not only about technical aspects but also about providing you with the freedom to take more pictures effortlessly." A Lens for People Who Travel and Live in the Fast Lane One of the first things you will notice when it comes to this Sigma product is its incredible lightweight and compactness. Indeed, with just about 290 grams (lighter than a can of soda), this lens becomes the best companion on any trip, in the city, or wherever else. In other words, this lens makes you shoot more often because it is not a hassle to carry around. See Latest Price & Availability Does Its Value Justify the Cost? Well, let us talk about the elephant in the room – the price, which is ₹46899.00. Is it worth this money? Taking into account the superb optical qualities – such as clarity, detailedness, and sharpness in all frames, together with a constant F2.8 aperture and lightness, it definitely represents the great value. Indeed, Sigma did not cut any corners regarding the image quality, and the results are astonishing. However, there is one nuance. Since this lens is Contemporary and not Sigma Art line, the build quality is decent, yet it uses plenty of plastic. So, you will not feel that it is as durable as many expensive professional lenses are. Though, this is the only drawback of a great piece of equipment that you get. Who Will Be Crazy About This Lens? Travel photographers: its lightness and versatility make it the best option for traveling. Everyday photographers: this is the best single-lens choice for you. Portrait enthusiasts: F2.8 aperture is great for achieving bokeh and isolating the subject. Content creators: wide-to-standard zoom and a big aperture are excellent for videos as well. Budget-conscious professionals: you can get pro-like results, but paying much less than with some other similar lenses. Who Would Consider Other Options? Pure wide-angle shooters: you will need a specialized prime or zoom lens for such shooting. Long-distance photographers: this lens will not get you closer to distant objects. You will need a separate lens for such purposes. People who prioritize optical stabilization: since many modern Sony cameras have in-body image stabilization (IBIS), this lens does not provide you with optical stabilization (OIS). Thus, you might want to use it if your camera does not have IBIS. The Only Caveat? (Just Maybe) The only caveat, if we can call it this way, is just to understand that this lens is a perfect general-purpose lens and nothing else. It cannot become a replacement for a macro lens or a 70-200mm zoom. However, for its main purposes as a light-weighted and fast zoom lens, there is hardly anything better.

Our Verdict

As I have already said, the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 has proven to be really sharp at close focusing distance for product photography, allowing me to shoot small products with great details without having to use extension tubes. The edge-to-edge sharpness remained good enough when I slightly stopped down from the maximum aperture, which is what any product photographer does for proper depth of field over the entire product. Background blur was controlled at f/2.8 setting enough to make products separated from the cluttered background when needed and not exaggerated in the same time. Focal length range is quite versatile for shooting both wide-lifestyle shots and detail close-ups without changing the lens. This lens is a really good choice for small businesses and amateur product photographers. It is reliable and effective enough for this genre.
